Joe Nuez scored four touchdowns and gained 256 yards as the Lancers (5-1, 1-0) defeated Wilson High of Long Beach (3-2-1, 0-1), 30-7, in the Moore League opener for both teams. This year, the Lancers are concentrating more on the run, and it is paying dividends for Nuez. Through the first six games, he has rushed for 690 yards and scored 10 of the team’s 15 touchdowns. Offensive coordinator Rob Wigod attributes Nuez’s success to his strength. “He’s the strongest guy we’ve got,” Wigod said. “He bench-presses 365 pounds.”
Other top performers:
Morris Luaveno, running back for St. Paul High of Santa Fe Springs, rushed for 148 yards and scored two touchdowns as he led the Swordsmen to a 14-13 win over Alemany in the Del Rey League opener.
Scoey Peters, running back for Poly High of Long Beach, rushed for 185 yards and scored both Jackrabbit touchdowns as Poly won its Moore League opener against Millikan, 13-7.
