U.S. Appliance Shipments Spurt: Shipments of major appliances rose 12.8% in September to 4.1 million units from 3.6 million units a year ago, the Assn. of Home Appliance Manufacturers said. Washing machines and garbage disposals each advanced to all-time monthly highs, while refrigerators, gas dryers and dehumidifiers performed well, the group said. Total shipments for the third quarter rose 8.8%. The industry projects that annual shipments will rise 4.8% to 45.1 million units.
