Cigna Corp. Earnings Plunge: Cigna Corp., one of the nation’s largest insurers, said its third-quarter earnings plunged more than 55%, mostly because of claims resulting from hurricanes Andrew and Iniki. Third-quarter profit totaled $55 million, or 77 cents per share, on revenue of $3.36 billion. That compared to earnings of $123 million, or $1.72 per share, on revenue of $3.41 billion a year ago. The earnings were “significantly reduced” by charges to the company’s property and casualty segment resulting from the two hurricanes, Cigna Chairman and Chief Executive Wilson H. Taylor said. The results were also affected by a charge of $140 million. This related to a review of London reinsurance operations, charges for settlement of claims disputes and losses on reinsurance of international bond and credit business, the company said.
