F.D.R.’S NEMESIS: Tuesday was a special election for Ethel Coplen of Irvine. It was the 60th anniversary of poll service for the 86-year-old Republican. She has worked every election since 1932, when she cast her first vote against Franklin Roosevelt. And she’s never once voted for a Democrat. . . . “I’m open-minded,” she says. “I just never saw any Democrats I liked.” This year is the first time she even considered crossing party lines, she says, because of the economy. But after much thought, she stuck with Bush.
