Kyetra Brown took charge down the stretch of Jefferson High’s 64-62 victory over Fremont on Thursday, but the junior point guard did it from the sideline.
Brown, a City 3-A first-team selection last season, fouled out with 3:13 to play, but her inspiration off the court helped the Democrats rally in a Southeastern Conference game at Fremont.
“At first, I was a little nervous for my team, but I had faith in them,” Brown said. “I was helping to get the crowd up.”
Jefferson trailed, 55-43, but closed the gap to 58-56 before Brown left the game. Shaka Smith put the Democrats ahead on a three-point shot, 59-58, with 2:19 to play.
Shonte Tippie sealed the victory, scoring on a layup and then sinking a field goal after a missed shot, to give Jefferson a 63-59 advantage with more than a minute left.
Bell Gardens 63, Mountain View 24--Nadine Beltran had 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead Bell Gardens to its second consecutive nonleague victory Friday.
