James A. Goode, 68, magazine editor, publisher and writer who was executive editor of Playboy and Penthouse. Goode headed Penthouse from 1972 to 1975 and from 1977 to 1981, and supervised Playboy for a brief time in 1975, and Playgirl from 1975 to 1977. Since 1991 he had served as editor of the National Times. Goode also was the founder and publisher of Earth magazine in San Francisco, founder of Earth News radio news service, and a writer for Life magazine and Show Business Illustrated. He also wrote screenplays such as “Silent Screen” and books including “The Story of ‘The Misfits.’ ” On Dec. 13 in Burbank of a heart attack.
