While most swimmers spend countless hours working out in the pool during the off-season, Azizians chooses a different way to help stay in shape.
She has spent the last two seasons as a reserve guard for the Cypress basketball team. But its in the pool where she truly excels.
Azizians, from Canyon High, won three events last Friday but Cypress lost to Palomar, 152-143. She took first in the 50-yard freestyle in 27.28 seconds. She also won the 50 butterfly (30.17) and the 100 butterfly (1:09.19).
Last season, she earned All-American honors in the 50 butterfly and as a member of three Cypress relay teams. She was also the winner of Cypress’ 1992 woman scholar-athlete award.
Other top performers:
Colleen Hatch, who ended her career at Orange Coast with 24 points as the Pirates lost to Hancock in overtime, 82-76, in the State Tournament quarterfinals.
Melanie Iwamasa, who scored 20 points as Golden West beat Fresno City, 68-55, then added 17 as the Rustlers lost to Hancock, 81-61, in the State Tournament.
