ANAHEIM — Sherry Bassin, part-owner and general manager of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League, interviewed for the Mighty Ducks’ general manager job Thursday, a source in Ontario said.
Bassin was registered at a Southland hotel Thursday under a Disney reservation. An attempt to reach him was unsuccessful.
Others among the group of perhaps six candidates being interviewed include Bob McCammon, 51, the former Vancouver Canuck and Philadelphia Flyer coach and onetime Flyer general manager, and Pierre Gauthier, 39, director of scouting for the Quebec Nordiques. Gauthier is scheduled to be interviewed today.
Bassin, 52, has extensive experience as an executive in the Canadian junior leagues and is highly regarded for his success at that level but has never worked for an NHL team.
Before moving to the Greyhounds, he was general manager of the Ontario Hockey League’s Oshawa Generals. Over the past decade, five teams built by Bassin have reached the Memorial Cup, the four-team tournament to determine the champion of the Canadian junior leagues.
Bassin, who has a law degree, was named the Canadian Hockey League executive of the year in 1991.
Team president Tony Tavares said March 1 that he hoped to name a general manager within two weeks but that it might take slightly longer. Once hired, the Ducks’ general manager will need to move rapidly to put together a scouting staff and prepare for the expansion and entry drafts in June.
