Clean Up or Shut Up

How Whaley Middle School students can, with straight faces, protest their school’s condition is beyond me (“Students Protest Conditions on Campus,” Times Valley Edition, Feb. 26).
Lack of funding does not put a can of spray paint in a kid’s hand, nor cause him to break a sink or cave in a wall.
Though tragic, this presents an excellent opportunity to educate these kids by canceling all classes and requiring them to don work clothes and fix up what they have ruined--even if it takes an entire semester. No math, science or English course can teach them how to be responsible human beings or instill in them that they have control over the livability of their surroundings.
