Woman Receives Liver Fished From Sea

EDINBURGH, Scotland — A human liver retrieved from the sea after a plane crash was successfully transplanted into a young woman Saturday, officials said.
Royal Navy divers recovered the liver lying in 20 feet of water after the light aircraft that had been transporting it from the central English city of Birmingham crashed into a coastal lagoon outside Edinburgh after its engine failed early Saturday.
The liver was rushed to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where it was transplanted into the woman. A hospital spokesman said the operation was successful and the patient was recovering.
Surgeons at the hospital had been anxious about the delay in the transplant operation and the condition of the liver after its hourlong immersion in the lagoon.
Police said the pilot and a passenger managed to get out of the plane before it sank. They were taken to the infirmary for treatment and later released.
