Businesses Seek Overhaul of Toxic-Waste Cleanup Law: A coalition of business and insurance groups has called for an overhaul of the federal toxic-waste cleanup law, saying the law is unfair, wastes millions of dollars and isn’t cleaning up the environment. The coalition includes Dow Chemical, AT&T;, General Electric and Boeing Co. Congress is expected this year to consider changes in the Superfund law, which has been the subject of dozens of critical studies since its 1980 enactment. So far, work has been completed on about 150 of more than 1,200 priority sites, while taxpayers have spent more than $9 billion and industry considerably more.
