Your “Foods We Hate” issue (March 18) was a hoot! The Food Section also has some of the best writing found in the entire newspaper.
I particularly liked Lynda Barry’s wry recollection of her mother’s awful cookies. I was not so fortunate in escaping my mother’s dried fruit strudel, which she made in enormous quantities for special occasions. It tasted stale when freshly baked and lasted forever, since there were always leftovers. Those things, heavy as bricks, could last for months sealed in tins. I’d share but somehow I never got that recipe. Interestingly, my mother was known far and wide as a wonderful cook. I guess the proof is that the strudel is the only awful thing I remember her making.
