UniCare Financial Corp.: The Irvine underwriter of workers’ compensation insurance said its first-quarter earnings more than doubled to $2.5 million, or 50 cents a share, from $914,000, or 18 cents a share, for the same period a year earlier. Revenue increased 8% to $36.2 million from $33.6 million. The company attributed the improved results to a decline in layoff-related workers’ compensation insurance claims in California.
