A summary of significant Los Angeles City Hall decisions affecting the Westside in the last week.

CITY COUNCIL

DEVELOPMENT CONTROL: Approved a resolution extending an interim ordinance that regulates commercial and industrial development along Westwood, Pico and Sepulveda boulevards in West Los Angeles. The ordinance was to expire Monday.

COMPOST FACILITY: Approved the construction and operation of a 20-ton-per-day composting facility on a one-acre site in Griffith Park. This facility will recycle Hyperion treatment plant sludge, yard trimmings generated from the park and the animal manure from the Los Angeles Zoo. Construction cost is estimated at $356,000. Operation and maintenance cost is expected to be about $250,000 a year. The compost will be sold to the public.

STREET FAIR: Approved the temporary closure of Olympic Place between La Jolla and Orlando Avenues from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 16 for the South Carthay Neighborhood Assn.’s street fair.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS: Councilman Nate Holden is proposing that $6,900 in city permit fees be waived to allow 150 banners to be displayed throughout the city announcing the California Special Olympics Summer Games, June 25-27 at UCLA. The banners will be displayed May 28 to June 28.

HOW THEY VOTED

How Westside representatives voted on selected issues.

REAPPOINT: Approved the reappointment of Michael Gage to the board of the Metropolitan Water District. Gage, who is chairman of the board, will continue as one of the city’s eight representatives on the water agency board. Gage will serve through Dec. 31, 1996. He is a former deputy mayor and chief of staff for Mayor Tom Bradley. PASSED: 10-1.

VOTING YES: John Ferraro, Nate Holden, Michael Woo and Zev Yaroslavsky.

ABSENT: Marvin Braude, Ruth Galanter and Mark Ridley-Thomas.

FOREIGN TRAVEL: Approved a proposal allowing seven city employees to attend a conference and seminar sponsored by the Government Finance Officers Assn. of the United States and Canada in Vancouver, British Columbia, Sunday through next Thursday. PASSED: 12-0.

VOTING YES: Ferraro, Holden, Ridley-Thomas, Woo and Yaroslavsky.

ABSENT: Braude and Galanter.

COMING UP AT CITY COUNCIL

RECOVERY FUND: On Friday, the council is to discuss the use of $6.2 million in federal recovery funds earmarked for the training and job placement of unemployed people who lost their jobs because of last spring’s riots.
