A sixth-grade teacher at Columbus Tustin Middle School has been nominated for the nationwide Sallie Mae First-Year Teacher Awards.
Desiree Keresztury, who joined the Tustin Unified School District in September, was nominated by district officials for her work as a language teacher. The program honors 100 outstanding first-year elementary and high school teachers throughout the United States.
Keresztury has formed a Spanish Writers’ Club for Spanish-speaking students, translated school materials into Spanish and established a classroom project about rain forests that drew community attention.
Keresztury is a member of the school’s Bilingual Advisory Council and the Parent-Teacher Organization. She is also co-faculty sponsor of the Pep Club.
Winners of the awards, sponsored by the American Assn. of School Administrators, will be announced in the fall.
