Woman Picked to Head AF

WASHINGTON — Aeronautics professor Sheila E. Widnall was nominated Friday by President Clinton to be secretary of the Air Force. She would be the first woman to head one of the military services.
In announcing her nomination, Clinton praised Widnall as “a woman of high achievement, a respected scientist, a skilled administrator and a dedicated citizen.”
“I am confident that she will do an outstanding job of guiding the Air Force through this period of post-Cold War change,” he said.
Widnall, 54, is associate provost at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she also is professor of aeronautics and astronautics.
