World IN BRIEF : NIGERIA : Party Retreats From Leadership Deal

Stung by a public outcry, a Nigerian political party backed away from a deal with the nation’s military dictator that would deny its candidate the presidency. Gen. Ibrahim Babangida had annulled the results of a June 12 presidential election but promised to step down Aug. 27. Unofficial results showed the election was won by billionaire financier Moshood K. O. Abiola, and senior officials in Abiola’s Social Democratic Party rebelled against the party’s executive council, which had agreed to form an interim government with the rival Republican Party.
