Disney Finds Trouble, Drops from Second to Next-to-Last

Roy Disney’s dream of winning the Transpacific Yacht Race faded fast Friday when his boat Pyewacket slipped from second to 11th place among the 12 ULDB 70s in the 37th biennial race to Hawaii.
The two-year-old Santa Cruz 70, apparently finding less wind than its rivals in the 24 hours before Friday morning’s position reports, logged only 165 miles. A day earlier there was a report that Pyewacket had been dismasted, but that proved unfounded.
Peter Tong’s new Orient Express, sailing farther south, logged 235 to leap from eighth to second, 11 miles behind John DeLaura’s Silver Bullet. Fred Kirschner’s Kathmandu jumped from ninth to fifth with the next-best day of 227 miles.
Six smaller boats that started the 2,225-nautical mile race earlier remained in front of the leading ULDB 70s, with Neil Barth’s Excel 53 Persuasion setting the pace 786 miles from Diamond Head. Silver Bullet, at 866, gained only 19 miles on the day.
The first boats are expected to finish late Monday night or Tuesday.
