OXNARD : Council Cuts Size of 2 Commissions

The Oxnard City Council agreed Tuesday to cut the size of the city’s planning and community relations commissions as part of a plan to come up with $605,000 that Oxnard owes the state government.
The council instructed city staff members to reduce the size of the two commissions from seven to five, and to streamline Planning Commission proceedings that are reviewed and often overturned by the council.
Commissioners receive money for expenses and the city spends several thousand dollars on support staff and copying fees for the commission members.
City Manager Vernon Hazen said he could not predict how much these steps would save, but said several other cuts would be necessary to reach $605,000.
Hazen said he would return to the council in late August with a cost analysis of these cuts and other proposed cutbacks.
“If we don’t make these cuts now, they’re going to have to be made next year,” Councilman Mike Plisky said. “We might as well face the music.”
