Sixteen South County residents are vying to fill the term of the late Iris Swanson on the Saddleback Community College District Board of Trustees.
District trustees will interview the candidates during public sessions today and Monday, and make a final decision as early as Tuesday, according to district officials.
Swanson, 66, who was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1985 and was a founding employee of the Saddleback Community College District, died on June 9 of cancer. She was president of the board at the time of her death, and her term ends in November, 1994.
The Board decided on June 16 to appoint someone to fill the remaining part of Swanson’s term, rather than hold a special election that would have cost an estimated $400,000, officials said.
Among the candidates are former Capistrano Unified School District trustees Brian R. Demsey and A. Edward Westberg.
Other residents who applied for the position are David M. Colville, Eugene N. Cramer, Carl W. Garrett, Jerry D. Holland, Wayne M. Lingenfelter, Teddi J. Lorch, Lupe D. Marino, Margaret A. Maynard, Daniel P. O’Keefe, John S. Roso, Milton B. Rouse, Kathleen R. Truxaw, Christopher G. Waggoner and Elmer S. Weissburg.
