The California Department of Transportation will close Newport Avenue at the Santa Ana Freeway tonight as part of its continuing freeway widening project, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.
From 8 tonight until 5 a.m. Thursday, workers will demolish and then reconstruct a segment of Newport Avenue under the freeway.
The street will be closed to traffic under the freeway. However, traffic along the freeway should not be affected, said spokeswoman Maureena Duran-Rojas.
The work, which should take only one night to finish, is expected to be noisy and accompanied by high-intensity work lights. However, if work is not completed by 5 a.m., it will resume at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Duran-Rojas said.
She suggested that southbound motorists avoid the area by going east on El Camino Real, south on Red Hill Avenue, then west on Nisson Road. Northbound motorists should travel east on Nisson Road, north on Red Hill Avenue, then west on El Camino Real.
