World IN BRIEF : SOUTH AFRICA : Leaders Call for Peace as Violence Continues

President Frederik W. de Klerk and a leader of the African National Congress, Tokyo Sexwale, made urgent calls for peace, but police issued another grim report: 16 dead in the ceaseless cycle of black township violence. The report of more bloodshed came two days after 12 white churchgoers were killed and more than 50 were wounded at a Cape Town church. In a bid to keep political negotiations moving, De Klerk’s government met with the Inkatha Freedom Party and urged the Zulu group to return to negotiations on a new constitution.
