Cerritos : Waste Reduction Law Prompts Hike in Pickup Fee

Residents and businesses will pay higher monthly trash collection fees as a result of city efforts to comply with a state waste-disposal law, officials said.
Cities are required to divert half their waste from landfills by 2000.
Cerritos is considering two options. Under one plan, trash would be sent to a Stanton facility, where recyclables would be separated from the garbage. Under the other, residents would separate their trash into city-issued, 60-gallon barrels--one for garbage, another for recyclables such as newspapers, and a third for grass clippings and other yard waste.
The residential rate would increase by a maximum $4.57, from the current $8.34 a month to $12.91. Commercial rates could go up a maximum $42.45, from $54.99 to $97.44.
