Tax Increase

* In your editorial “California Fuming” (July 20) you state that increased gasoline taxes would hurt California’s recession-plagued economy. In this you are correct; increased taxes cause damage, not growth.
Now apply the same logic on a national scale. President Clinton’s proposed record tax increases will kill any chance this country has of economic recovery. Taxes are not raised for the benefit of the taxed.

* The economists keep telling us that the “recession” officially ended 2 1/2 years ago.
Tell that to the millions who have lost their jobs, with layoffs continuing by the tens of thousands nationwide in the worst depression since the 1930s.
Sen. Bob Dole and his obstructionists should get out of the way and give President Clinton’s recovery plans a chance.
