Coach Hospitalized, Player Arrested After a Brawl at Harbor College

A brawl that broke out after Saturday’s football game between Pierce College and Harbor College left one coach in the hospital and another injured.
Pat Swift, an offensive line coach at Pierce, was listed in stable condition at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Saturday night after being knocked unconscious when a Harbor player reportedly hit him over the head with a crutch.
Harbor’s Dion Mills, 19, of Carson, later turned himself in at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Harbor Division station, according to Sgt. Howard Silverstein. Mills was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapons and released on $35,000 bail.
Bill Norton, the Pierce head coach, was also injured. He was treated for cuts and bruises at Harbor-UCLA and released.
Pierce assistant coach Phil Wijmer was taken to Bay Harbor Hospital in Harbor City and was treated for a chest bruise and later released.
The game, which Pierce won, 23-0, was played at Harbor College in Wilmington.
The fight apparently broke out after most of the players had gone to the dressing rooms.
