Condition of Burned Firefighter Upgraded to Good

The condition of Cleveland Tipton, one of four Los Angeles city firefighters badly burned in the Santa Susana Pass fire last week, has been upgraded to good at the Sherman Oaks Hospital burn center, a spokeswoman said Sunday.
Two others, Capt. Jan Bernard, of North Hills and Senior Firefighter Russell Nakamura, of Valencia, remained in critical condition. The fourth, novice Firefighter Gary Carpenter, of Downey, was in serious condition, hospital spokeswoman Johna Rogovin said.
The crew of Engine 98 became the worst casualties of the battle against Southern California’s fires just before dawn Wednesday when a vortex of flame swept through the firetruck cab where they had taken desperate refuge.
