Outside Gunman Shoots Man Inside His Home

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — A 23-year-old man was shot in the back while in his house Monday evening. The gunman was standing outside, police said.
Francisco Vergara was wounded by a man in front of the house in the 26000 block of Lazanja Street, Sheriff’s Lt. Ronald Wilkerson said.
Vergara was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, where he was reported in serious condition.
“It does not appear to be a drive-by,” Wilkerson said, adding that the victim has no gang affiliation.
“It’s a real strange sort of a situation,” Wilkerson said. “We don’t know what was going on. We’re calling it an assault with a deadly weapon.”
Wilkerson said witnesses described the assailant as a man in his 20s, wearing a black T-shirt.
