LOS ANGELES : Ridley-Thomas Urges City to Boycott Rose Parade
- Share via
Los Angeles City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas called on the city Friday to withdraw its annual float from the Rose Parade beginning in 1995 if the Tournament of Roses does not diversify its all-white Executive Committee.
“The history of this 100-year-old organization is . . . rife with a tradition of denying women and persons of color access,” Ridley-Thomas said.
The motion, which will be considered by the City Council next week, comes amid calls by critics for more women and ethnic minorities to be added to the eight-member Executive Committee for the New Year’s Day parade.
