Bill Introduced to Free Baby Bells: Two influential lawmakers introduced a bill that would eventually allow the seven regional Bell telephone companies to provide long-distance service and manufacture telecommunications equipment. They have been banned from such activity since the old Bell system was broken up in 1984. The bill, introduced by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jack Brooks (D-Tex.) and House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman John D. Dingell (D-Mich.), would also permit the regional Bells to offer information and burglar alarm services.
