Japan’s Konoike Transportation & Engineering Co. will invest $40 million to construct a new cold storage facility near the port, an investment that is expected to create 100 permanent jobs and more than 500 construction jobs at the port during the facility’s development, Gov. Pete Wilson announced while on a trade mission in Japan. Wilson said the facility will be “the largest of its type on the West Coast.” The new facility will be built in Wilmington. Wilson noted that Konoike, one of the oldest and most experienced firms in its field in Japan, will be able to take advantage of business incentives enacted by the Legislature this year, including reforms to environmental and workers’ compensation laws.
