87-Year-Old’s Antarctic Expedition Jeopardized

ANCHORAGE — A planned Antarctic expedition by an 87-year-old explorer was in jeopardy after a supply plane crash-landed.
The plane, which also carried 20 sled dogs, was forced to land Friday on Antarctica about 10 miles from a camp where Norman Vaughn planned to set up a base.
A radio operator on the plane broke a leg, but no other injuries were reported, and the dogs were not hurt.
Vaughn, who lives outside Anchorage, accompanied Adm. Richard Byrd on his historic trip across the continent in 1929. He plans to scale a 10,300-foot peak that bears his name.
