OUTLOOK
After Mater Dei, it’s a runner-up race between Dana Hills, which returns five lettermen, and Capistrano Valley, a traditionally strong program. Whereas the Cougars’ two league losses were to the Monarchs last season, no one expects the league’s No. 2 team to be as lucky this year. “Even though Mater Dei is the heavy favorite, the bottom half of the league has really improved. Some teams are catching up,” said Rich Kelly, Dana Hills’ assistant coach. Present company included. Dana Hills was 5-5 in league last year, but a good summer, depth galore and a talented nucleus point toward high expectations for the Dolphins, who will build the team around co-captains Hefty, one of the county’s top volleyball recruits, and Karidis, a third-year player. Meyers has good quickness and Lacy is a tough outside shooter--especially the three-pointer--but can be streaky. Clem and Randall should battle for the remaining starting spot. The Dolphins should have a strong inside game, and the outside game will be improved. One glaring weakness is their lack of a true point guard, but time should rectify that. This could be the season for Dana Hills to improve upon its best league record: 6-4.
