Train Gunman in Court With Bulletproof Vest

MINEOLA, N.Y. — The suspect accused of killing five commuters and wounding 18 others on the Long Island Rail Road wore a bulletproof vest Friday when he appeared in court to have a lawyer appointed.
Authorities, concerned about revenge attacks for the Tuesday night shootings, insisted that Colin A. Ferguson wear the vest. Handcuffed and shackled during the 10-minute hearing, he craned his neck to hear his new attorney, Anthony Falanga.
Ferguson, 35, remained in jail.
