Pepperdine Loses to Weber St., 66-63

WACO, Tex. — Pepperdine suffered its first loss of the season Friday night as Kirk Smith had 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead Weber State to a 66-63 victory in the first round of the Dr Pepper Invitational.
Weber State (6-1) trailed, 36-32, at halftime, then moved ahead, 65-63, when Johnnie Moore hit a tip-in off the board with 1:34 remaining. Moore had eight points and 14 rebounds.
Robbie Johnson added a free throw with 11 seconds left and missed the second, giving Pepperdine (3-1) a chance to send the game into overtime.
But Bryan Parker, a senior guard, missed an open three-point shot with two seconds left, and Weber State advanced to tonight’s championship game against Baylor, the tournament’s host team.
Pepperdine was led by Damin Lopez, who had 14 points. Parker had 12 points, nine assists and six rebounds.
