Disability Cuts to Be Rescinded

SACRAMENTO — Disability payments for thousands of California workers will increase in January when a gubernatorial order lifts an emergency decree that had cut benefits.
Gov. Pete Wilson directed that the cuts be rescinded last week after new financial reports showed that the State Disability Insurance Program no longer faces insolvency.
Wilson cut the benefits last February in response to Employment Development Department warnings that the program was running out of funds. Most benefits were reduced by 15%, although the maximum payment was cut from $336 to $266 a week.
At present, 275,000 Californians are receiving disability checks.
