A Ventura man has been sentenced to seven years and three months in prison for robbing two banks in the city last year, authorities said Thursday.
Peter Mendez Lopez, 31, pleaded guilty Oct. 1 to robbing a branch of Security Pacific Bank on Main Street on Aug. 20, 1992, and American Commercial Bank on South Mills Road four days later, said Charlie J. Parsons, an FBI official in Los Angeles.
Lopez was also suspected of robbing two other banks, one in Oxnard and another in Santa Barbara, but those charges were dropped in return for his plea, Parsons said.
Federal Judge Matthew Byrne Jr. sentenced Lopez in Los Angeles on Dec. 20. Lopez will remain on probation for three years after serving his prison term, Byrne said.
Lopez was at-large when San Diego police arrested him Jan. 18 in connection with an auto theft. A check of his background revealed an outstanding arrest warrant for bank robbery, Parsons said.
