Police Charity Calls Bogus, Officials Say

The Redondo Beach Police Department is urging residents to beware of telephone callers who claim to be police officers collecting money for charity and disabled colleagues.
Police have received widespread reports this week of callers who introduce themselves as members of the Redondo Beach Police Officers’ Assn. and ask if they can visit to pick up donations.
The police association does not solicit funds from the public, said Wayne Windman, crime prevention supervisor for Redondo Beach police.
“I feel terrible, because people are donating money,” said Windman, who has heard of calls occurring throughout the South Bay.
Police warn residents who receive such calls to contact their local police department and never to invite the solicitors into their homes.
Los Angeles city officials reported last week that telephone solicitors were collecting millions of dollars under the guise of raising money for the Los Angeles Police Department.
