On August 16, 1896, four miners discovered gold in Bonanza Creek, precipitating a stampede of would-be prospectors into the Yukon Territory, a region geography and climate made virtually inaccessible. Satterfield guides the reader along the most popular trail, which ran from Seattle to Dawson City in the Klondike via Skagway and White Horse, peppering his account with colorful anecdotes. This entertaining history offers an introduction to the string of parks and preserves the U.S. and Canadian governments will open in August, 1997, along the historic route that lead a few to great wealth and many to great hardships.
