Major Hikes Estimate of Growth: British Prime Minister John Major said his government estimated the country’s economy would grow perhaps as much as 3% this year. That compares with a 2.5% increase estimated last November. Major told a BBC interviewer there could be a large decrease in unemployment in 1994 and he expects inflation to remain in the range of 1% to 4% until mid-1997. In 1993, Britain emerged from a 2 1/2-year recession and is expected to have the highest growth rate in the European Union in 1994. However, the jobless rate remains at 10%.
