Suspect Caught, With an Assist From Police Dog

Police used a dog to subdue an Oxnard man after the man led them on a high-speed chase through Oxnard and Port Hueneme early Saturday morning, authorities said.

Octavio Morales Rivera, 20, was arrested at 4:20 a.m. after police said he led them on a high speed chase, ignoring red lights and exceeding 85 m.p.h.
Port Hueneme police said they initially attempted to stop Rivera because his car fit the description of a vehicle used in a shooting on West Juniper Street in Oxnard. No one was injured in the shooting, police said.
The chase ended when Rivera turned onto a dead-end street and stepped out of his car. But police said that even after he had been stopped, Rivera refused to cooperate with officers. When Rivera reached for his belt, a Port Hueneme officer released his dog to attack.
Rivera was subdued by the dog, arrested, and later treated for dog bites. Police said they found a sawed-off shotgun near Rivera.
