Cal Lutheran Lays Low After Monstrous Sweep of Caltech

THOUSAND OAKS — Ho-hum. Cal Lutheran scores 87 runs in a three-games series and Coach Marty Slimak can’t remember who played well.

Or maybe doesn’t want to remember. In deference to Caltech, the victim of Cal Lutheran’s 32-0, 22-2 onslaught in a doubleheader Saturday, Slimak was reluctant to discuss Kingsmen heroics.

“To tell you the truth, I didn’t want any of this in the paper,” he said, adding that his team tried to avoid running up the score.

After the Kingsmen beat Caltech, 33-5, Friday to open the three-game Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series, Saturday’s outcomes were a foregone conclusion. Cal Lutheran outhit the Beavers, 73-14, in the series.

Andrew Barber pitched a perfect game in the opener and Jason Wilson hit for the cycle in the second game.

Cal Lutheran (3-1, 3-0 in SCIAC play) had 55 hits in the doubleheader. Slimak, however, could not recall many individual statistics about the games when reached at home. He left his scorebook at school.

Outfielder Chad Miyata hit a pair of home runs in the first game.
