NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : U.S. May Waive HIV Ban for Gay Games

The Justice Department is considering a temporary waiver of a ban forbidding HIV-infected people to enter the United States, officials and gay activists said. The waiver would allow visitors infected with HIV, which causes the AIDS virus, to participate in the Gay Games, scheduled to take place in New York in June. One U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a communique on the waiver had been prepared in anticipation of approval by Atty. Gen. Janet Reno. He said the communique had been mistakenly sent to embassies.
