LONG BEACH : Shadowlands of Art Along the Shore

The parking meters and light posts will be sprouting some strange shadows in the next few months along the sidewalks of Belmont Shore’s main business arterial.
There’ll be stained sunglasses, herons, palm trees, sea gulls and egrets over 14 blocks along 2nd Street. The creations, by artist and educator Craig Cree Stone, are part of “Shadows Casting on the Shore,” a $50,000 public arts project commissioned as the final stage of a $2.9-million street-widening. Stone also will produce 20 images on boulders along the street’s median. The arts project will be funded by parking meter revenues.
Stone, who teaches in the American Indian Studies and Art departments at Cal State Long Beach, was selected by a public arts panel and confirmed by a commission consisting mostly of Belmont Shore residents. The arts project is expected to be completed by next fall.
