Brea-Olinda, three-time defending state girls’ champion and top-ranked by The Times, lived up to expectations with a 70-40 victory over No. 17 Newport Harbor in the Southern Section Division III-AA championship at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.
Before about 2,000, Sarah Beckley led the Ladycats (29-0) with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Colleen Hudson and Nicole Erickson added 15 each.
Genevieve Evarts led Newport Harbor (22-7) with 22 points.
The title was the first for Coach John Hattrup, who replaced Mark Trakh, and was Brea’s sixth in a row.
“Our kids have been here before and we know what these games are like,” Hattrup said. “If we have a good game plan and play hard, we know good things will happen.”
