REGION : Academy of Arts, Sciences Names Southland Honorees

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences has announced the election of 183 new fellows in recognition of their contributions to science, scholarship, public affairs and the arts.
Those honored from Southern California universities include Robert Grubbs and Shrinivas Kulkarni of Caltech; Ronald Rogowski, Charles Young, Robert Dallek and Nikki Keddie of UCLA; Albert Bennett, Thomas Hines, A. Kimball Romney and Brian Skyrms of USC, and Robert Dynes, Norman Kroll, Kurt Benirschke, Clive Granger and Michael Rothschild of UC San Diego.
Other honorees include Pulitzer Prize winners Jeff MacNelly of the Chicago Tribune, historian David McCullough, and authors Jane Smiley and Anne Tyler.
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences was founded in 1780 by John Adams and other founding fathers of the United States with the express goal of cultivating “every art and science which may tend to advance the interest, honor, dignity and happiness of a free, independent and virtuous people.”
The academy is based in Cambridge, Mass.
