OUTLOOK
Nelson didn’t have a banner first year as the Saints failed to win a league game. “We had a tough season,” Nelson said. “We had a bunch of injuries and ineligibilities. We never had the same group together.” It didn’t start out any easier this season for Santa Ana because the Saints first scrimmaged Dana Hills, then opened the season against Capistrano Valley. Dana Hills and Capistrano Valley are the No. 1 and 2 teams in the county and feature two of the nation’s top high-school pitching prospects, Seth Etherton and Pete Zamora. “We saw Etherton and Zamora back-to-back,” Nelson said. “But I told our kids that lots of teams aren’t going to get a lot of hits against them.” The Saints managed only two against Zamora and Capistrano Valley, but the Saints will have to manufacture runs against everyone this season. Mata is a three-year starter and Fausto returns in center field.
