Honoree Aids Not Just Latino Causes

* I was pleased to see recognition given to Frederick Aguirre in the article “Writer, Lawyer Make It to Hall of Fame” (Jan. 20). Mr. Aguirre has made significant contributions to the community and deserves to be honored by Placentia.
However, the article focused primarily on Mr. Aguirre’s activities within the Latino community. Mr. Aguirre has made significant contributions and been involved in numerous civic programs and projects of a more general nature and not limited in focus to a singular community.
I point this out to hopefully foster awareness among the public that persons of Latino descent make contributions to all of us.
He serves as a role model for the Latino community, that is true. But he also demonstrates that someone of Latino descent or birth can make a difference in the Anglo community.
Mentioning only his ethnic achievements serves, unwittingly of course, to foster perceptions that Latinos should only be appointed to ethnic programs, committees and boards.
Mr. Aguirre has demonstrated that this need not be the case and in fact it is not the case. MICHELLE A. REINGLASS
