BUCHAREST, Romania — A former Romanian convict nearly choked to death on stolen gold jewelry he swallowed to avoid being caught red-handed by police, the daily newspaper Adevarul said Tuesday.
The newspaper said Barbu Stelian, 25, fresh out of jail for robbery, was chased by police after snatching two necklaces with gold charms from a woman walking in a central Bucharest street.
The man gulped down the evidence when he saw police were closing in on him. He has since been hospitalized for treatment, and doctors say they might operate on him to recover the jewels.
