Reggie Sanders of the Cincinnati Reds was suspended for five games and fined an unspecified amount by Len Coleman in his first action as National League president. Sanders was suspended for charging the mound during Pedro Martinez’s perfect game bid last week. Sanders immediately appealed, delaying the penalty. . . . San Francisco Giant batting coach Bobby Bonds was expected to be released from an Atlanta hospital today after suffering a heart problem. Bonds, 48, apparently experienced a coronary artery spasm during Thursday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves. The condition is associated with smoking, the team said. . . . Cincinnati councilman Todd Portune tried to head off a confrontation with Red owner Marge Schott over her illegal smoking at Riverfront Stadium. Portune spoke with her on the telephone for about an hour, but declined to say whether an understanding was reached. . . . Montreal Expos’ relief ace John Wetteland was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring.
