VENTURA — Despite a record effort by Oxnard College catcher Robert Sanchez, Ventura defeated the Condors, 5-4, Saturday in a Western State Conference baseball game.
In the fourth inning, Sanchez gunned down three Ventura runners trying to steal second.
“That’s a record that can be tied, but never broken,” Ventura assistant Don Adams said.
Sanchez, a freshman, threw out four runners in the game. Ventura leads the conference with 86 stolen bases this season.
Ventura (22-14, 11-9 in WSC games) jumped to a 5-1 lead and held on when Bob Patterson pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning en route to his first save. Craig Arnold pitched five shutout innings in relief for Oxnard (15-20, 9-12).
